Brazil-China Agreement Ushers in a New Era for Sesame Exports
Production growth and the historic surge in Brazilian sesame exports following the opening of the Chinese market.
The Historic Rise of Brazilian Sesame
Brazil is strengthening its position as a highly productive sesame supplier, supported by the crop’s strategic role between major harvests. National output rose 104% in the previous year and was projected to reach 175,800 tonnes in the 2023/24 season, an increase of 184% compared with 2021. Mato Grosso, particularly the Canarana region, accounts for 52% of this production strength, with more than 90,700 tonnes.
Reflecting this expansion, the Brazilian government formally opened trade with China in Brasília in November 2024. China is the world’s largest sesame importer. The milestone reflects the competitiveness of Brazil’s market, where total sesame exports rose from 42,000 tonnes in 2022 to 151,000 tonnes in 2023, a record increase of 257%.
Sesame is an off-season crop that provides a vital opportunity to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness.
